The Former President's Regime of Punishment and Favor

The ex-president's intense desire for retribution has quickly transformed into a structured apparatus. During the twelve months, the leader's fury and whims have adopted the shape of official policies in a manner reminiscent to earlier authoritarian governments. Government personnel who resist his demands are summarily fired and substituted by loyalists. Critical officials who challenge him risk legal action, judicial process and sanctions. Opponents have been designated under executive memoranda as “unpatriotic”, “against faith communities” and “opposing economic freedom”, and threatened with legal action as “extremists”.

Federal Agencies Remade

Every instance involving legal action of political opponents and immunity for supporters demonstrates its own unique features. However, despite their specific form, they embody expressions of what has arisen as a calculated approach. Those events are far from isolated. Trump's cleansing of DoJ lawyers and law enforcement agents, accompanied by his placement of loyalists in key posts, began quickly, soon took on a regularity, and has now been molded into a system. DoJ and the FBI have been restructured into partisan agencies under the president's direct orders to execute his wishes. Wrongdoing has been made normal. It constitutes the retribution system.

Administration is focused with penalizing the chief's supposed opponents than they are with safeguarding our public welfare.

Within the System

The beginnings of this system has been revealed in the court filing of multiple ex- senior Federal Bureau officials filed in late summer in the federal court in the capital against top official an administration figure and top lawyer a key figure for wrongful dismissal in “a effort of payback against the officials for what Defendants judged to be a failure to show adequate allegiance”. The document states that one official, the former interim leader, describes a discussion in which he “freely confessed the illegality of his behavior”.

The official had sought to defend FBI agents from being dismissed, the complaint claims. He informed him that “administration officials” – interpreted by Driscoll to be the executive branch and federal prosecutors – had instructed him to dismiss everyone who they identified as having participated in a criminal investigation against Trump. The complaint adds: “The director clarified that he had to terminate the personnel his leaders told him to remove, because his capacity to keep his own role depended on the removal of the agents who were involved in investigations involving the chief executive. Patel commented that there was no way he or him could do to halt these or any other dismissals, because ‘the bureau tried to incarcerate the President in jail and he recalls it clearly.’” After the official informed the director he was disregarding the agency's own internal rules, the director reportedly said “he knew that and he realized the essence of the swift terminations were probably illegal”.

Widespread Impact

After Patel's reported admission to him, the DoJ and the law enforcement agency have been dismantled and reorganized for Trump's revenge apparatus. Several of the agency's senior executives were terminated or compelled to leave in the early weeks of the administration. Roughly 4,500 professional attorneys at DoJ have accepted a “voluntary departure plan”. At least several government attorneys, such as those in the New York office, quit in objection over what they regarded as ideological pressure in dropping the corruption case against the New York City mayor, the mayor, in as a trade for his cooperation with the administration's ICE arrests of migrants. The ethics division of the department, which oversees ethical violations, has been reduced to minimal staff. The rights protection unit has been decimated: 70% of its personnel has left. 33% of executives at the department have quit. The section upholding ecological regulations has lost 50% its leadership.

Incentives and Punishments

Concerning the mayor's situation, the interim prosecutor for the federal division, the official, quit in dissent against what she characterized as the “exchange”. A key figure, the president's “immigration leader,” appeared as the agent with him on Fox News to state: “Unless he complies, I will return in NYC.”. Meanwhile, a former official, formerly the justice department figure and a ex-lawyer, who brokered the arrangement, was given an appellate federal judgeship, a likely stepping stone to the supreme court.

Trump's protection for crimes carried out while in government, awarded by the extraordinary decision of the Republican majority on the highest court, thus preventing his criminal case over the January 6 insurrection and safeguarding his public standing for the 2024 election, is the foundation stone on which he relies to protect his loyalists. With such immunity, he has been freed to permit corruption. The impact of the judicial ruling permeates his presidency and the Republican Party down to its bones. Trump v United States has metastasized. In the words of Richard Nixon's administration lawyer he said about the Watergate
