The UK and US have forged a important commercial pact that will guarantee zero import taxes on British medicine exports going into the US market.

Key Provisions of the Deal

As part of the deal, the UK has agreed to boost funding on drugs through the public health system. This commitment secures that duties on these crucial exports will be held at zero for a period of 36 months.

This development follows previous statements to dramatically increase tariffs on patented drug products, with figures discussed up to 100%.

"This arrangement between the UK bolsters the international landscape for innovative medicines and brings long-overdue balance to transatlantic drug exports," a statement declared.

Economic Impact

Medicines constitute one of the UK's biggest goods shipped to the America, which is by far the largest market for leading companies like GSK and AstraZeneca.

Export figures show that in the 12 months prior to the third quarter, the UK shipped pharmaceutical products totaling billions to the US. This amount represented a significant portion of British export trade in that period.

"This agreement secures work, stimulates capital expenditure and sets the stage for the UK to establish itself as a global hub for medical research," a minister remarked.

Key British Pledges

The pact involves several specific pledges from the British government:

  • Revised Affordability Limit: The UK will increase the cost ceiling at which it judges new treatments to be too expensive by twenty-five percent.
  • Boosted Medicine Funding: There is a target to increase total public funding on treatments from 0.3 percent of GDP to 0.6% over the following ten-year period.
  • Payback Limit: The amount drug companies must return to the NHS to stay within budget will be limited at 15%. Last year, rebates were more than twenty percent.

Industry Background

The pact comes amid a long-running dispute between the sector and the UK government over medicine costs and approval rates.

These tensions were intensified by assertions that US consumers were paying a premium for the equivalent treatments than patients in the other developed nations.

In recent months, several significant manufacturing plans in the UK have been halted or abandoned, while multi-billion-dollar investments have been pledged toward American operations.

One official acknowledged that the NHS needed to spend more on drugs, noting that its spending on drugs had declined as a share of its total funding over the last ten years.
